The XTRONS IAH84PMPT is an 8.4 inch Android head unit for the Porsche Panamera (2010-2016) with the PCM 3.1 system. It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, 4G and a glare-reducing nano-texture screen, while keeping the original BOSE or Burmester fibre optic sound system, camera and parking sensors.
CarPlay connects to your iPhone without a cable, putting maps, messages and music on the 8.4 inch screen. Say "Hey Siri" to make a call or set a destination without taking your hands off the wheel.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android Auto connects wirelessly too. Say "Hey Google" for Google Assistant, and navigation, calls and music are all on the screen.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The unit retains the original optical fibre sound system, so BOSE and Burmester systems carry on playing through the factory speakers. A fibre optic decoder is in the box.
The original camera and parking sensors still work, and the screen shows door status, speed, mileage and range.
The 8.4 inch HD IPS screen has a wide viewing angle and a smooth, responsive touch. Its nano-texture glass is etched to reduce glare and reflections, so it stays clear in bright sunlight.
A flagship octa-core chip made on a 12nm process runs the latest Android OS, with 4GB DDR4 RAM and 128GB of SSD storage. You can change the UI theme to suit your taste.
Insert a Micro-SIM card and the unit has its own 4G mobile broadband connection for maps and streaming, without tethering your phone.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi lets the unit connect to a hotspot or your home network for app downloads and updates.
The DSP chip lets you adjust the sound to your taste from the unit's settings, so you can balance it for the Panamera's cabin.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
Instant reversing mode brings up the camera picture as soon as you select reverse. The unit works with the original camera and with optional AHD 720P/1080P cameras.
Connect a reversing camera and its picture appears on the screen when you select reverse. Automatic switching needs the reverse signal wired in. If your car already has a factory camera, check whether you need an adapter to keep it.
CANbus decoding keeps original functions working after the upgrade, including steering wheel control, reversing radar, door information and fuel consumption.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
DAB+ radio needs an external DAB tuner, such as the XTRONS USBDAB01, USBDAB02, USBDAB04, ACUSBDAB05T or ACUSBDAB06, sold separately.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, useful for apps outside CarPlay and Android Auto while parked.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
You can add an OBD scanner to read trouble codes, a TPMS to show tyre pressures, a keyboard, or HD/RCA output with the XTRONS USBHDMI or USBRCA. Each is sold separately.
Two USB cables and an original USB adapter cable are included, so you can keep using the car's USB socket.
