A universal double DIN Android 15 head unit with a 7 inch QLED IPS screen, for cars with a 178x100mm radio slot. It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in 4G and an AKM DSP with optical, coaxial and RCA outputs for serious audio set-ups.
The unit is a standard double DIN size and fits cars with a double DIN factory radio and a 178x100mm slot. For a single DIN slot, you'll need the XTRONS DD129S as well.
An ISO standard power cable is included. A custom fit fascia, custom ISO cable and CANbus box are not, and some car models need them, so check what your car requires before ordering. The unit doesn't play discs.
Your iPhone connects to CarPlay without a cable, bringing maps, music, messages and calls to the 7 inch screen. The phone can stay in your pocket, and Siri handles requests by voice.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android phones connect wirelessly or with a USB cable. Google Maps, music and messages appear in a layout designed for driving.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The AKM 7604 digital sound processor has a 36-band equalizer, so you can fine-tune the sound to suit your speakers and the cabin rather than settling for a few presets. It's a good base if you plan to upgrade the speakers or add amplifiers.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
An ST TDA7851 amplifier chip (max 4×48W output) powers the speakers directly, giving a strong, clean sound without an external amplifier.
The built-in amplifier drives your car's speakers directly, which is all most cars need. If your car has a factory amplifier, as many premium sound systems do, it usually stays in use and may need an adapter, so check before ordering.
Fibre-optic, coaxial and RCA outputs let you connect external amplifiers or a separate sound processor. An RCA cable is in the box.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
The 7 inch QLED display runs at 1280×720 with strong, bright colours. Maps and album art look sharp, and day/night mode keeps it comfortable after dark.
It's an IPS panel, so the picture holds up when viewed from the passenger seat. The fully-laminated construction cuts down reflections between the glass and the panel.
Built-in 4G gives the unit its own mobile data connection with a SIM card, so maps and streaming keep working without your phone's hotspot. A 4G antenna is in the box.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Dual-band Wi-Fi connects the unit to a hotspot or your home network for app downloads and updates, and carries the wireless CarPlay and Android Auto connection.
Two Bluetooth modules let you connect two devices at once. Qualcomm aptX HD handles hands-free calls and music streaming at higher quality, while Unisoc Bluetooth 5.2 connects third-party devices such as an OBD scanner with low latency.
AM/FM radio with RDS is built in. For digital radio, the unit supports an external DAB tuner, sold separately.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, useful for apps that aren't available in CarPlay or Android Auto. Use it when parked or let a passenger take charge.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
Steering wheel control is supported, so the buttons on the wheel can still change volume and tracks. Some cars need a custom ISO cable with CANbus box for this.
The unit supports front and rear cameras (not included), and a camera cable is in the box.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
Android 15 runs on the UNISOC 7865 octa-core processor (2x Cortex A75 @2.2GHz + 6x A55 @1.8GHz) with 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage, so the unit starts up quickly and apps load without waiting. The housing is rigid aluminium with a turbo fan and smart fan control to keep it cool.
The XTRONS launcher has a weather widget, an inclinometer, PiP mode and a choice of themes.
