A 9 inch Android 14 head unit for the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class R171 (2004-2011). It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in 4G and an AKM DSP with optical, coaxial and RCA outputs, and keeps factory features such as the steering wheel controls through CANbus.
This unit fits the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class R171 (SLK200, SLK280, SLK300, SLK350 and SLK55) from 2004-2011. The face panel is 249/240x162mm, and your centre console should be trapezoidal without a trim strip above. With a trim strip, choose the XTRONS IMHP94M211; for a quadratic-shaped console, the IMHP94M245.
Cars with COMAND APS need an extra optical decoder box to keep the original COMAND system: the FOBB01 for 2004-2008 cars with NTG 1, or the FOBB03 for 2009-2011 cars with NTG 2.5.
Once fitted, the CD changer and original motorised compartment stop working, and air conditioning information isn't shown.
CarPlay connects your iPhone over Wi-Fi, so maps, music and calls come up on the 9 inch screen as soon as you're in the car. Voice control lets you ask for a route or a playlist without touching the phone.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android phones connect wirelessly too. Google Maps and your music apps appear in a layout designed for driving, and Google Assistant takes care of messages and destinations.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 9 inch QLED screen has a 1280×720 resolution with bright, vivid colours and an anti-glare finish. That helps a lot in an open roadster with the sun overhead.
It's an IPS panel behind G+G tempered glass, so the picture stays clear from the passenger seat and the touch response is crisp.
The AKM 7604 DSP has 36-band equalisation, so you can tune the sound precisely to the SLK's cabin and speakers rather than relying on a few presets.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
A TDA7851 amplifier (4x 48W output) drives the speakers, with enough power for clear sound with the roof down.
The built-in amplifier drives your car's speakers directly, which is all most cars need. If your car has a factory amplifier, as many premium sound systems do, it usually stays in use and may need an adapter, so check before ordering.
Fibre-optic, coaxial and RCA outputs let you add an external amplifier or processor. An RCA cable is in the box.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
Insert a standard Micro-SIM and the unit has its own 4G LTE connection for real-time traffic, weather and streaming, without tethering to your phone. A 4G antenna is supplied.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Dual-band 2.4G/5G Wi-Fi carries the wireless CarPlay and Android Auto connection and lets the unit join a hotspot for downloads and updates.
Two Bluetooth modules work at the same time. Qualcomm aptX HD streams music at higher quality, while Unisoc's low-latency 5.2 module connects an OBD-II scanner or a dash cam.
An external DAB tuner is supported for digital radio. It's sold separately.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, useful for apps that don't run in CarPlay or Android Auto. Use it when parked.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
The CANbus box keeps factory features such as ACC and door reminders, and the steering wheel controls keep working, so you can adjust the volume or skip a track with your hands on the wheel.
A camera cable is in the box for connecting a reversing camera.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
The Unisoc 7865 Octa-Core chipset (2x Cortex A75 @ 2.2GHz + 6x A55 @ 1.8GHz) runs Android 14 with 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage. Navigation, music and 1080P video run together without lag, and a built-in gyroscope gives a live roll and pitch display.

The unit comes with ISO wiring harnesses, a CANbus box, radio adapter cables and an extension cable. You may need to trim the plastic guide rails inside the radio slot, so test all functions before modifying anything. If your car's power port matches the one XTRONS shows and there's no radio antenna port, you'll also need the AK/PSP90M211/PWRC power cable, AK/PF7M211A/FOBB01 decoder and EC/ARL/RANT01 antenna. Japanese-manufactured vehicles need extra cable work by a professional installer.
Only with an extra optical decoder box: the XTRONS FOBB01 for 2004-2008 cars with NTG 1, or the FOBB03 for 2009-2011 cars with NTG 2.5.
It needs a trapezoidal console without a trim strip above. With a trim strip, use the IMHP94M211; for a quadratic-shaped console, the IMHP94M245.
