The XTRONS QAMS1450M12C5 is a 10.25 inch Android 13 screen for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205, GLC-Class X253, V-Class W446 and X-Class W470 with COMAND APS NTG 5.1 or NTG 5.2. It adds wireless CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, and you keep the CD player, radio and COMAND system.
This unit only works with the original COMAND APS NTG 5.1 or NTG 5.2 system in the C-Class W205, GLC-Class X253, V-Class W446 and X-Class W470. These systems usually have a 4 pin LVDS port and the Telematic Generation 5.1/5.2 interface.
The CD player, radio and COMAND system all stay, and a swipe of the screen takes you into Android.
For older systems, see the XTRONS QAMS1445M12C45L (left-hand drive) or QAMS1445M12C45R (right-hand drive) for NTG 4.5 or NTG 4.7, and the QAMS1440M12C40 for NTG4.0.
CarPlay connects to your iPhone without a cable, with maps, music and messages on the 10.25 inch screen and Siri for voice commands.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android Auto works with or without a cable, and Google Assistant takes voice requests.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
Insert a SIM card and the 4G module gives the unit its own internet access for navigation, video and apps. You can also share the connection as a hotspot.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi connects the unit to a home network or a phone hotspot.
Android 13 runs on a 12nm octa-core chip at up to 2.0GHz with a Mali G52 GPU, 4GB DDR4 RAM and 64GB ROM.
The DSP lets you shape the sound to suit the cabin and where you sit.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, for apps outside CarPlay and Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
The USB connection gives you wired Android Auto and lets you plug in USB devices.
Microphone support allows hands-free calls and voice commands to Siri or Google Assistant.
DAB digital radio works when an external DAB tuner is connected.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
