A 12.3-inch Android 14 screen upgrade for the BMW 5 Series G30 / G31 with the NBT EVO system, made as a plug-and-play replacement for the factory display. It works alongside the original BMW system, so you keep the CD player, radio and iDrive while gaining wireless CarPlay, wireless Android Auto and built-in 4G.
This screen doesn't replace the BMW system, it works with it. The factory CD player, radio and iDrive controller stay in use, and you can switch to Android for apps, CarPlay and Android Auto.
One thing to know: after fitting, gesture control can't be activated, and the touch screen doesn't work when you switch back to the original system. You use the iDrive controller there instead.
Wireless CarPlay is built in. Your iPhone connects when you start the car, and maps, calls and music appear on the wide screen without plugging anything in.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android Auto connects wirelessly too, putting your Android phone's navigation, calls and music on the 12.3-inch display in a layout made for driving.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 2400 x 900 IPS panel is fully laminated, with G+G touch glass. Colours are accurate and the picture holds up when viewed from the passenger seat, which helps when someone else is reading the map.
The wide shape suits a map on one part of the screen and music on the other.
With 4G built in, the unit has its own data connection for music streaming and real-time navigation, and it can share that connection with your passengers. It covers a wide range of FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE bands, including 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 28.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi covers both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so you can connect to a hotspot or your home network to download apps and updates.
Add an XTRONS USB DAB+ tuner and you can receive digital radio stations through the unit, with a stronger signal than an aerial alone. The tuner is a separate accessory.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
The unit has a microphone input for hands-free calls. For even clearer calls, it also works with an XTRONS external microphone, sold separately.
The unit works with XTRONS AHD 720P and AHD 1080P reversing cameras, so you can see what's behind you when you reverse.
Connect a reversing camera and its picture appears on the screen when you select reverse. Automatic switching needs the reverse signal wired in. If your car already has a factory camera, check whether you need an adapter to keep it.
An external XTRONS DVR can record your journey and show it on the screen. Several models are compatible, some with ADAS driver assistance.
Recordings from a dash cam show on the car screen, live or played back. It needs a USB dash cam made for Android head units; an ordinary dash cam with its own screen won't connect this way. Mount the camera behind the mirror, clear of your view.
Pair an XTRONS OBD2 scanner and the unit can show real-time data and trouble codes from the car's computer, so you can spot a problem early.
Plug an OBD2 adapter into the car's diagnostic port and the head unit can show live engine data, such as coolant temperature, and read fault codes. It reads the standard engine codes, not everything a dealer's diagnostic equipment can reach.
With an XTRONS TPMS kit fitted to the wheels, tyre pressures show on the head unit in real time.
The head unit shows each tyre's pressure and warns you when one drops. It needs a TPMS kit: a receiver and a sensor for each wheel. Cap sensors screw on in minutes, while internal sensors are fitted by a tyre shop.
An RCA cable and an audio box come with the unit for connecting its sound into the car's audio system.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 octa-core processor, built on 6nm technology and running at up to 2.4GHz, powers Android 14. With 8GB of dual channel DDR4 RAM and 128GB of solid state storage, apps open quickly and there's room for plenty of them.

The screen is a plug-and-play replacement for the factory display in G30 / G31 cars with the NBT EVO system, and comes with a fix mount, plastic bracket, ISO wiring harness and audio box. Check your car has NBT EVO before ordering. After fitting, gesture control can't be activated, and the original system is operated with the iDrive controller rather than by touch.
