The XTRONS QLB42FVNB is a 14.9 inch Android 13 screen for the BMW 5 Series F10/F11 (2013-2016) with the original NBT system. It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto and built-in 4G, and works alongside the car's own system without removing the CD player.
This unit only works with the original BMW NBT system. NBT usually has a 6-pin LVDS port, a MEDIA button or touch pad on the iDrive controller, and a BMW ConnectedDrive interface, although the ConnectedDrive screen alone doesn't prove it's NBT.
For CIC cars, see the XTRONS QLB42FVCI. For a G30/G31 with NBT EVO, see the QAB12EVB12FVN.
The Android screen sits alongside the car's original system, and the CD player doesn't need to come out.
CarPlay connects to your iPhone without a cable, putting maps, music and messages on the 14.9 inch screen as soon as you're in the car.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android Auto also connects wirelessly, with Google Maps, music apps and calls on the wide display.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 14.9 inch QLED screen is fully laminated, with a custom bezel and a 2.5D edge for a full-screen look in the dashboard. QLED gives strong, rich colour on maps and video.
The IPS panel holds its colours when seen from the side, so the passenger can follow the map or pick music too.
Insert a SIM card and the unit has its own 4G connection for navigation, video and online apps, without using your phone as a hotspot. A 4G antenna is in the box.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi lets the unit join a home network or hotspot for downloads and streaming.
The DSP lets you adjust the sound to suit the car's speakers and the driver's seat.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
An RCA audio output lets you connect an external amplifier or subwoofer.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, handy for apps outside CarPlay and Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
A USB cable is included for connecting a phone or USB device.
A mini microphone comes in the box for hands-free calls and voice commands.

The unit fits with the ISO wiring harness, audio cable, fix mount, face panel and screws in the box, and the CD player stays in place. Sound plays through the car's AUX input, which must be switched on. If your car has no AUX input, you'll need an FM transmitter, such as the XTRONS CA/ITR/FM02 or CA/ITR/FM03.
NBT usually has a 6-pin LVDS port and a MEDIA button or touch pad on the iDrive controller. A ConnectedDrive screen on its own doesn't confirm it.
The XTRONS QLB42FVCI for CIC cars, and the QAB12EVB12FVN for a G30/G31 with NBT EVO.
You'll need an FM transmitter such as the XTRONS CA/ITR/FM02 or CA/ITR/FM03.
No, the original CD player stays.
