A 7 inch Android 14 head unit made for the BMW E39 (1995-2003) and E39 M5 (1999-2003). It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, 4G with a Micro-SIM, an AKM DSP and navigation, and a camera comes in the box.
This unit fits the BMW E39 from 1995-2003 and the E39 M5 from 1999-2003, with a 285x120mm face panel. If there's a frame in the centre console, remove it before fitting. There's no DVD drive.
For a BMW E38 with an HVAC box behind the factory radio, the XTRONS PX1439BLHGS is the one to choose.
CarPlay turns the 7 inch screen into a wireless display for your iPhone, with voice commands so you can keep your hands on the wheel. It works with iPhone 5 and later on iOS 8 and above.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Full-featured Android Auto puts Google Maps and music apps on the screen. It supports Android phones running Android 4.3 and above.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The AKM DSP chip gives you customisable sound modes and EQ settings, so you can set the bass, mids and highs to suit the music and the E39's speakers.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
The G+G touch screen uses IPS technology, so there's no colour shift when you look at it from an angle. Videos play smoothly at up to 2K 60fps.
Insert a Micro-SIM card and the unit has its own 4G mobile broadband connection for maps and streaming. A 4G antenna and SIM card slot cable are in the box.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi lets the unit join a hotspot or your home network for app downloads and updates. A Wi-Fi antenna is supplied.
A microphone is included for clearer hands-free calls and voice commands.
A camera comes in the box, so you can add a view behind the car when reversing without buying one separately.
Connect a reversing camera and its picture appears on the screen when you select reverse. Automatic switching needs the reverse signal wired in. If your car already has a factory camera, check whether you need an adapter to keep it.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, handy for apps that don't run in CarPlay or Android Auto. It's best used when parked.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
The unit supports an external DAB tuner for digital radio, sold separately.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
Android 14 runs on a 12nm octa core 2.0GHz processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM. Its components are rated from −30°C to +80°C, so it copes with cold mornings and hot summer days.

The unit comes with an ISO wiring harness, CANbus box and installation brackets. If the radio antenna port is in the boot, you'll need the XTRONS ISOFZ and FZMF extension cables; a factory 4.3'' or 7'' screen on a 12 pin plug, or a navigation drive in the back, needs a 6m extension cable (EXL005 or EXL007). Cars with Logic7 or a fibre optic radio input without 8 speaker wires need the FOBB05 decoder, and Harman Kardon or DSP-button cars need the EXL007. Only connect the blue plug if there's a blue 12-pin plug in your dash.
Cars with Logic7, or a fibre optic radio input without 8 speaker wires, need the XTRONS FOBB05 decoder to keep the factory amplifier and avoid a no-sound problem.
Yes, a camera is in the box.
If your E38 has an HVAC box behind the factory radio, choose the XTRONS PX1439BLHGS instead.
iPhone 5 and later on iOS 8 and above, and Android phones on Android 4.3 and above.
No, this unit doesn't have a DVD drive.
