Once your iPhone is paired, CarPlay connects by itself when you get in, so there's no cable to plug in for a short trip. Maps, messages, calls and music appear on the 9″ screen.

You can ask Siri for directions or to play something, which keeps your hands on the wheel.

Android phones get the same treatment. Android Auto starts over the air and puts Google Maps, your music apps and calls on the head unit.

Voice commands let you reply to messages or change route without touching the phone.

The 9″ QLED display runs at 1280×720 and uses G+G touch technology. It's anti-glare, so the map stays readable when the sun is on the dash.

The Mali-G52 GPU keeps animations and live wallpapers smooth, and 1080P video plays back without fuss when you're parked.

The screen is an IPS type, so colours and contrast hold up when you look at it from an angle. That matters in a car, where the driver and passenger both see the screen off-centre.

The DAB+ tuner sits inside the unit, so there's no external box to wire in. A DAB antenna comes with it.

You get a wider choice of digital stations than on FM, and FM/AM with RDS is still there through the TDA7708 tuner.

An AKM7738 triple-core DSP handles the sound, with DTS sound effects and Hi-Res Audio support. That gives you more control over how the music sounds in your cabin than a factory radio allows.

High-resolution files keep their detail, which you'll notice most with good speakers.

The built-in TDA7803A amplifier is rated at 4x47W max output. It drives the car's existing speakers directly, so you don't need a separate amp to get a decent volume.

Put a standard nano-SIM in the unit and it has its own data connection. Live traffic, weather and streaming keep working without tethering your phone.

A 4G antenna and a SIM card slot cable come in the box.

Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz) lets the unit join a phone hotspot or your home network on the drive. The 5GHz band is quicker for downloading app updates and maps.

Bluetooth 5.1 handles hands-free calls and streams music from your phone. A separate microphone comes with the unit, so it can be mounted near you for clearer calls.

The GPS receiver uses GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS and Galileo satellites. Using several systems at once helps it hold a position in towns and between tall buildings.

A GPS antenna is supplied, and you can run the navigation apps you prefer.

Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit. It's handy for apps that don't run in CarPlay or Android Auto, best used by a passenger or when parked.

CANbus decoding, with a CANbus box in the kit, keeps the factory steering wheel controls working. What works depends on what your car had originally.

It also shows factory information such as mileage, engine speed, fuel consumption, battery voltage, PDC and air conditioning info on the screen.

Fast reverse mode brings up the camera picture quickly when you select reverse, and the unit supports 1080P AHD cameras (sold separately).

If your car already has an original reversing camera, you'll need an extra video decoder box to keep it.

Android 16 runs on a MediaTek MT6769V Octa-Core chipset with 4GB DDR4 RAM and 64GB UFS 2.2 storage. Menus respond quickly and you can keep navigation and music running together.

A built-in gyroscope gives an inclinometer display for pitch and roll. A cast aluminium heat sink keeps the unit stable on long drives.
