Pair your iPhone once and CarPlay starts on the screen when you get in, without plugging in. Your maps, messages, calls and music apps come up in a layout made for driving, and the phone can stay in your pocket or bag.

If you'd rather charge as you drive, you can plug in with a USB cable and use CarPlay wired instead.

Android phones get the same treatment through Android Auto. It connects wirelessly over Wi-Fi, or through USB if you prefer a cable, and puts navigation, calls and your music apps on the 10.1-inch screen.

The unit has its own 4G LTE modem. Put a standard nano SIM in it and it has an internet connection for maps, streaming and apps, without tethering to your phone.

That's handy on longer runs, as live traffic and music streaming keep working even when your phone is busy or low on battery.

The 10.1-inch QLED panel shows a 1280×720 picture with strong colour, which keeps map details and album art easy to pick out at a glance.

It's a touch screen, so you control everything with a tap or swipe, as you would on a phone.

The screen uses IPS technology, so the picture stays clear when viewed from an angle. In a van, that means the passenger can read the map or pick a track just as easily as the driver.

The built-in DQ7603 DSP lets you shape the sound to suit the cabin and your speakers, so music sounds balanced rather than boomy or thin.

It works alongside the built-in amplifier and the extra audio outputs if you plan to add amplifiers or a subwoofer later.

A STMicroelectronics TCB001HQ amplifier rated at 4x45W drives the speakers directly, so you don't need a separate amplifier for a standard speaker setup.

As well as RCA outputs, the unit has optical and coaxial audio outputs. These let you feed an external amplifier or sound processor if you want to build a bigger system around the head unit. An RCA cable is in the box.

Wi-Fi works on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so you can connect to a hotspot or home network for app downloads and system updates. The 5GHz band is usually faster and less crowded.

The unit picks up GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BEIDOU satellites, which helps it find your position quickly and keep it in built-up areas. A GPS antenna is included.

Screen mirroring shows your phone's own screen on the head unit, so you can use an app that doesn't run in CarPlay or Android Auto. Mirroring works when the phone is connected by USB.

The radio is DAB+ ready: connect an external DAB tuner and you can listen to digital stations. Without one, the built-in RDS-FM/AM tuner handles FM and AM radio and shows station information.

Bluetooth 5.4 handles hands-free calls and streams music from your phone. A microphone comes in the box so callers can hear you clearly.

Connect a 720P or 1080P AHD camera and the picture appears as soon as you select reverse, which makes backing a van into a tight space far easier. The camera connection is part of the wiring harness, and a camera cable is included.

Android 15 runs on an ASR8662 octa-core processor with 6 GB of DDR4 RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, which leaves room for your apps and keeps them quick to open.

From cold it starts in 50 seconds, and from a warm start it's ready in 1 second. A cooling system keeps performance steady on long drives.
