The XTRONS IM1453BH is a 10.25 inch Android 14 head unit for the BMW X5 E53 (1999-2006). It brings wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in 4G and an AKM DSP to the X5's dashboard, and keeps factory functions through CANbus.
Your iPhone links to CarPlay over Wi-Fi, so maps, calls and music are on the 10.25 inch screen without a cable. Voice commands handle directions and messages while you drive.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android phones connect to Android Auto wirelessly too, bringing Google Maps, calls and music apps to the dashboard with controls sized for driving.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 10.25 inch QLED panel runs at 1920×720, sharp enough for detailed maps. It has an anti-glare finish for sunny days and G+G tempered glass on the front.
The IPS panel keeps its colours from an angle, so it reads as well from the passenger seat as from the driver's.
The AKM 7604 DSP gives you a 36-band equaliser, so you can correct the peaks and dips of the X5's cabin and speakers rather than just turning the bass up or down.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
The TDA7851 amplifier delivers 4x48W, enough to drive the factory speakers without adding an amp.
The built-in amplifier drives your car's speakers directly, which is all most cars need. If your car has a factory amplifier, as many premium sound systems do, it usually stays in use and may need an adapter, so check before ordering.
Fibre-optic, coaxial and RCA outputs give you a clean signal for an external amplifier or processor if you upgrade the system later.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
Two Bluetooth modules work side by side. The Qualcomm module streams music with aptX HD, and the Unisoc 5.2 module can link to an OBD-II scanner or a dash cam at the same time as your phone.
Fit a standard Micro-SIM and the unit has its own data connection for live traffic, weather and streaming, without tethering to a phone.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi runs on 2.4G and 5G bands, carrying wireless CarPlay and Android Auto and connecting to a hotspot for updates and app downloads.
Mirror your phone's screen on the head unit for apps that don't run in CarPlay or Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
Add an external DAB tuner and the unit can receive digital radio stations.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
CANbus integration keeps factory features such as ACC and door reminders. Your factory steering wheel controls for volume, track and calls carry on working, so you can use the stereo without reaching for the screen.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
The built-in gyroscope and inclinometer show real-time roll and pitch, useful when the X5 is off the tarmac, with no extra sensors to fit.
A Unisoc 7865 octa-core chipset (two A75 cores at 2.2GHz and six A55 cores at 1.8GHz) works with 4GB RAM and 64GB UFS 2.2 storage. It plays 1080P video and runs navigation and music together, and it's rated from -30°C to +80°C.

The unit plugs into the X5's original wiring using the supplied ISO harness, CANbus box and installation holder. If there's a frame in the centre console, remove it first. Cars with the aerial port in the boot need XTRONS ISOFZ and FZMF extension cables, an original radio with a 4.3" or 7" screen and 12 pin plug needs ICE/ACS/BMWDSP01, and a factory DSP button means ordering the AKEXL007FZMF extension cable.
Yes. CANbus integration keeps the factory steering wheel controls for volume, track and calls.
