XTRONS QGB23UMB12X1 is a 12.3 inch Android 13 screen for the BMW X1 E84 (2009-2015) that left the factory without a display. It adds a touch screen with wireless CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, while you keep the original radio, CD player and iDrive.
CarPlay connects to your iPhone without a cable. Maps, music, calls and messages appear on the 12.3 inch screen, and Siri handles voice requests on the move.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android phones connect wirelessly to Android Auto, with Google Maps, music apps and Google Assistant on the head unit.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
Fit a Micro-SIM card (not included) and the unit has its own data for streaming, live navigation and sharing internet with passengers. The 4G is for data only, not phone calls, though you can make voice or video calls through apps.
Not every 4G band is supported. In Europe it covers bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38 and 40, so check your network uses one of these before ordering.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi works on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, so you can join a phone hotspot or home network to browse, stream and update apps.
Microphone support allows hands-free calls and voice commands through the head unit.
DAB digital radio works with an external DAB adapter, sold separately.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 is built on 6nm technology, with 4 x Kryo 265 Gold and 4 x Kryo 265 Silver cores reaching up to 2.4GHz. With 8GB DDR4 RAM and 128GB storage running Android 13, there's room for plenty of apps.
The original CD player, radio and iDrive system stay in use alongside the new screen.
