The XTRONS IM8446BH is an 8.8 inch Android 14 head unit made for the BMW E46 3 Series, the Rover 75 and the MG ZT. It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in 4G and an AKM DSP, and keeps factory functions through the CANbus box.
CarPlay connects over the unit's dual-band Wi-Fi, so there's no cable to plug in each time. Your iPhone's maps, calls and music show on the 8.8 inch screen, and you can use voice commands to keep your hands on the wheel.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android Auto also runs without a cable. Google Maps, calls and music apps appear on the dashboard as soon as your phone connects.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 8.8 inch QLED screen runs at 1280×480. Its wide shape fits the E46 dashboard, and the anti-glare finish keeps it readable in direct sunlight. G+G tempered glass covers the panel.
Because the panel is IPS, colours stay true when seen from the side, so the passenger can follow the map too.
The AKM 7604 DSP comes with a 36-band equaliser. That's fine enough control to tame a boomy door speaker or lift the treble on older factory speakers, rather than relying on simple bass and treble settings.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
A TDA7851 amplifier rated at 4x48W powers the speakers directly, so the factory speakers get proper volume without a separate amp.
The built-in amplifier drives your car's speakers directly, which is all most cars need. If your car has a factory amplifier, as many premium sound systems do, it usually stays in use and may need an adapter, so check before ordering.
Fibre-optic, coaxial and RCA outputs let you connect an external amplifier or processor if you want to build a bigger system later.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
There are two Bluetooth modules, one Qualcomm and one Unisoc. The Qualcomm module streams music with aptX HD, while the Unisoc 5.2 module can connect to an OBD-II scanner or a dash cam at the same time.
Insert a Micro-SIM and the unit has its own mobile data for live traffic, weather and streaming, with no need to tether your phone.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi works on 2.4G and 5G bands. The faster band carries wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and the unit can also join a hotspot for downloads and updates.
Screen mirroring puts your phone's display on the head unit, which helps with apps that don't work in CarPlay or Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
The unit supports DAB radio when you add an external DAB tuner.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
CANbus integration keeps factory features such as ACC and door reminders, and the steering wheel control adapter lets you change tracks and volume without taking your hands off the wheel.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
A built-in gyroscope and inclinometer show the car's roll and pitch in real time, without fitting extra sensors.
The Unisoc 7865 octa-core chipset has two A75 cores at 2.2GHz and six A55 cores at 1.8GHz, with 4GB RAM and 64GB UFS 2.2 storage. It plays 1080P video and handles navigation and music together. The unit is rated to work from -30°C to +80°C.

The unit plugs into the E46's original wiring with the supplied ISO harness and CANbus box. Depending on your car you may need extra cables: XTRONS ISOFZ and FZMF if the aerial port is in the boot, ICE/ACS/BMWDSP01 for an original radio with a 4.3" or 7" screen and 12 pin plug, and AKEXL007FZMF if the factory radio has a DSP button. In a Rover 75 or MG ZT the trim on both sides of the unit has to be cut, and a 36pin radio harness needs the AK/PSP9046B/ISOCBL02 harness; test every function before trimming.
Yes, but the trim on both sides of the unit has to be cut to fit. Check all the functions work before you trim. If your radio harness is 36pin you'll also need the AK/PSP9046B/ISOCBL02 harness.
Yes. Insert a standard Micro-SIM into the built-in 4G module.
Yes. The unit has two Bluetooth modules, so a phone and an OBD-II scanner or dash cam can be connected at the same time.
