CarPlay connects to your iPhone wirelessly, so there's no cable to plug in. Maps, music, calls and messages come up on the 8.8 inch screen, with Siri for voice requests.

Android phones connect to Android Auto wirelessly or by cable. Google Maps, music apps and Google Assistant appear on the head unit.

The 8.8 inch IPS panel runs at 1280 x 480 with a G+G touchscreen and full lamination. Wide viewing angles mean the passenger sees the same clear picture as the driver.

The interface switches between day and night modes automatically with the car's lights, and a factory-style theme is available if you prefer the BMW look.

The unit works with the original iDrive system, amplifier system, CD player, radio and Bluetooth. The steering wheel controls keep working and the backup camera display is retained.

Front and rear AHD cameras up to 1080P are supported, sold separately. The rear camera gives a real-time reversing image with a wide angle and clear night vision.

Split-screen shows two windows side by side, so the map stays up while you change the music.

The built-in DSP lets you adjust the sound to suit the car. Audio plays through the car's AUX input, so AUX must be enabled.

Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz gives a stable connection for 4k streaming and navigation at the same time, through a phone hotspot or home network.

Bluetooth 5.0 handles clear hands-free calls and music streaming from your phone.

Navigation uses GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou positioning for accurate, real-time guidance. A GPS antenna comes in the box.

Passengers can mirror videos and games from a phone to the screen wirelessly. Use it when parked if you're the driver.

A USB cable is supplied for connecting a phone or playing media from a USB stick.

Microphone support gives hands-free calls and voice control through the head unit.

DAB digital radio works with an external DAB adapter, sold separately.
