The XTRONS QLBH44EVTW3 is a 14.9 inch 2K Android 14 screen for the BMW 2 Series F45 / F46 MPV (2018-2019) with the original NBT EVO system. It adds wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in 4G and a DSP, and the original CD player stays in place.
This unit only works with the original BMW NBT EVO system. EVO usually has a 6-pin LVDS port, and the version info shows "NBTevo_xxx" and "Automatic map update". The look of the iDrive screen alone doesn't prove the car has EVO.
The CD player stays in place. After fitting, the original system is operated with the iDrive controller, because touch doesn't work there and gesture control can't be activated.
The 14.9 inch Grade-A 2K IPS screen has a 32:9 shape, so a map and another app can share it without switching. It's fully laminated, with a custom bezel and a 2.5D edge.
CarPlay connects your iPhone without a cable and lays maps, music and messages across the wide display. Voice control keeps your hands on the wheel.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android Auto connects wirelessly too, with Google Maps, music and calls on screen.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
A 12nm octa-core chip with 8GB DDR4 RAM and 128GB ROM runs Android 14 with room for plenty of apps.
Insert a SIM card and the unit gets its own 4G connection for navigation, video and online apps. A 4G antenna is included.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi connects the unit to a home network or hotspot.
The DSP lets you set up the sound for the car's speakers and your seating position.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit for apps outside CarPlay and Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
A USB cable is in the box for a phone or USB device.
A mini microphone is included for hands-free calls and voice commands.
DAB digital radio works when an external DAB tuner is connected.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
