A custom-fit 8.8-inch Android 14 head unit for the Audi TT MK2 8J (2006-2012). It replaces the factory radio with a QLED touch screen and adds wireless CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, 4G and an AKM DSP, while CANbus integration keeps the steering wheel controls and factory features.
CarPlay connects over the unit's Wi-Fi, so your iPhone links up without a cable. Maps, calls, messages and music show on the 8.8-inch screen, and you can use voice commands to keep your eyes on the road.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android phones connect to Android Auto wirelessly in the same way. Navigation, calls and music apps appear in a layout made for driving.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 8.8-inch QLED panel has a 1280×480 resolution, shaped to suit the TT's dashboard. Colours are strong and the anti-glare finish helps in bright sun.
The G+G tempered glass gives a firm, precise touch surface.
As an IPS panel, the picture stays clear when viewed from the side, so it's readable from the passenger seat too.
The AKM 7604 DSP comes with a 36-band equaliser, which gives you fine control over the sound. You can tame boomy bass or lift the vocals to suit the TT's cabin and speakers.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
A TDA7851 amplifier with 4x 48W output powers the speakers directly, so a standard speaker setup needs no extra amplifier.
The built-in amplifier drives your car's speakers directly, which is all most cars need. If your car has a factory amplifier, as many premium sound systems do, it usually stays in use and may need an adapter, so check before ordering.
For a bigger system, the unit has RCA outputs plus optical and coaxial digital outputs to feed an external amplifier or processor. An RCA cable is included.
RCA pre-outputs send a clean, low-level signal to an external amplifier or subwoofer. Count the channels you need (front, rear and sub) against the outputs in the specifications. You'll also need RCA leads and power wiring for the amplifier.
Fit a standard Micro-SIM and the unit has its own 4G connection for real-time traffic, weather and streaming, without tethering to your phone.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Wi-Fi runs on 2.4G and 5G bands. It carries wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and lets you connect to a network for updates and app downloads.
There are two Bluetooth modules. The Qualcomm module streams music using aptX HD, and the Unisoc Bluetooth 5.2 module connects accessories such as an OBD-II scanner or a dash cam at the same time.
An OBD-II scanner can connect over the second Bluetooth module, so engine data can be read on the head unit while your phone stays connected for music and calls.
Plug an OBD2 adapter into the car's diagnostic port and the head unit can show live engine data, such as coolant temperature, and read fault codes. It reads the standard engine codes, not everything a dealer's diagnostic equipment can reach.
A dash cam can also link up over the Unisoc Bluetooth module, letting you view it through the head unit.
Recordings from a dash cam show on the car screen, live or played back. It needs a USB dash cam made for Android head units; an ordinary dash cam with its own screen won't connect this way. Mount the camera behind the mirror, clear of your view.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's display on the head unit, so you can use apps that don't run through CarPlay or Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
Connect an external DAB tuner to listen to digital radio. The tuner is a separate accessory.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
CANbus integration keeps the TT's factory features, such as ACC and door reminders. The steering wheel buttons for volume, track and calls keep working, so you can change the music without taking your hands off the wheel.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
The Unisoc 7865 octa-core chipset (2x Cortex A75 at 2.2GHz and 6x A55 at 1.8GHz) runs Android 14 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.2 storage. It handles navigation, music and 1080P video at once without slowing down.
A built-in gyroscope and inclinometer can show roll and pitch, and the unit is rated from -30°C to +80°C.

The unit is a plug-and-play fit for the TT MK2 8J and connects through the supplied ISO wiring harnesses and CANbus box. Check the car's radio aerial port first, as you may need the XTRONS ICE/ACS/ISOFZ cable. If the rear speakers have static or no sound after fitting, the XTRONS AK/INIB/NRCBL cable fixes this on cars with a 40pin ISO plug.
Yes. CANbus integration keeps the factory steering wheel controls for volume, track and calls.
A standard Micro-SIM.
That calls for the XTRONS AK/INIB/NRCBL cable. Check that your original ISO wiring harness plug is 40pin before ordering it.
Yes. There are optical, coaxial and RCA audio outputs for an external amplifier.
XTRONS's own pages for this product, as the manufacturer publishes them. Open any of them at full size to zoom in.
