Your iPhone connects to CarPlay without a cable, so maps, calls, messages and music appear on the wide screen as soon as you're under way. Voice control means you can ask for a route or send a reply without taking your hands off the wheel.

Android phones connect through Android Auto, wirelessly or with a cable. Navigation, calls and your music apps sit on the 12.3-inch screen, laid out for use on the move.

The wide 2400×900 IPS display is fully laminated, with no air gap between the glass and the panel. That cuts down reflections, so the picture stays sharp in bright daylight and from either front seat.

Day and night themes change the look of the interface, so it's easy to read at noon and not too bright after dark.

With a 4G LTE module built in, the unit can have its own data connection for live traffic, streaming and app updates, without relying on your phone's hotspot.

Wi-Fi works on 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Connect to your phone or a home network to download apps and updates quickly.

The screen works alongside the Audi's original system rather than replacing it. The factory amplifier, CD player, radio, Bluetooth, reversing camera display and steering wheel controls all keep working, so nothing you use today is lost.

The buttons on the wheel still change volume and tracks while you drive.

Navigation apps use GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS and Galileo satellites for an accurate position. On a 12.3-inch screen, the map and your next turn are easy to see together.

Screen casting shows your phone's display on the head unit wirelessly, so you can use apps from the phone that don't run in CarPlay or Android Auto.

The Adreno 610 graphics chip handles split-screen and picture-in-picture, so you can keep the map on one side while you change the music on the other.

The unit keeps the factory reversing camera display and also works with front and rear AHD cameras. The rear view appears in real time as you reverse.

Bluetooth 5.1 handles hands-free calls and audio streaming, and a microphone is built in. For clearer calls, an external microphone can be added.

You can connect an XTRONS DVR dash cam to the unit and view the recording on the big screen. The dash cam is a separate accessory.

For digital radio, the unit works with an XTRONS DAB tuner, which is a separate accessory. The factory radio also stays in place.

The unit also accepts an XTRONS OBD scanner, for reading engine data on the screen, and a TPMS kit, for showing tyre pressures. Both are separate accessories.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 octa-core processor, built on an 11nm process, does the work, with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of UFS2.2 storage. That's enough for maps, music and video apps to switch over without a long wait.
