The XTRONS IP76M164 is a 7 inch Android 16 head unit made to replace the factory radio in the Mercedes-Benz M-Class W164 and GL-Class X164. It adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in 4G and an AKM DSP, and keeps a CD/DVD drive for your discs.
Your iPhone connects to the unit without a cable, so maps, calls, messages and music appear on the dashboard screen while the phone stays in your pocket.
You can still plug in with a USB cable if you prefer a wired connection. Voice commands let you ask for directions or a song without taking your hands off the wheel.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Android phones get the same treatment. Android Auto runs wirelessly or over USB, putting Google Maps, calls and your music apps on the 7 inch screen with large, simple controls.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
The 7 inch QLED screen runs at 1280×720 and uses G+G touch glass. Colours are strong and the anti-glare finish helps when the sun is on the dashboard.
It sits in a face panel shaped for the W164 and X164 dashboards, so it looks like it belongs in the car.
The screen is an IPS type, so the picture holds its colour when seen from the driver's seat or the passenger side rather than only straight on.
The AKM7738 DSP gives you control over how the sound is shaped, so you can tune it to the car rather than live with the factory balance. DTS sound effects add width to music and films.
The unit also has Hi-Res Audio support for high quality music files.
The sound processor lets you tune the sound to your car: an equaliser, a delay for each speaker so the sound centres on your seat, and crossovers that keep deep bass away from small speakers. Start from a preset and change one setting at a time.
A TDA7803A amplifier drives the speakers at up to 4x47W maximum output. That's enough to run the factory speakers properly without adding a separate amp.
The built-in amplifier drives your car's speakers directly, which is all most cars need. If your car has a factory amplifier, as many premium sound systems do, it usually stays in use and may need an adapter, so check before ordering.
Put a nano-SIM in the unit and it has its own mobile data connection. Live traffic, weather and streaming then work without tethering to your phone, and the phone's battery is left alone.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Dual-band Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz connects the unit to a hotspot or your home network for app downloads, updates and streaming.
Bluetooth 5.1 handles hands-free calls and music streaming. An external microphone comes in the box, so it can be mounted near you for clearer calls.
Screen mirroring shows your phone's screen on the head unit, which is useful for apps that don't run in CarPlay or Android Auto.
Mirroring shows your phone's whole screen on the car screen, unlike CarPlay and Android Auto, which show apps designed for driving. It usually needs a companion app on the phone, and paid video streaming apps often block it.
The unit supports DAB radio through an external DAB tuner, which you'll need to add if you want digital stations.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
CANbus decoding keeps the steering wheel controls working, along with ACC, reversing control, door reminder, light control and handbrake control. What you keep depends on what your car had from the factory.
A built-in gyroscope can show pitch and roll on screen as an inclinometer.
Your steering wheel buttons keep working with the new unit, either through a CAN bus decoder or by teaching the unit each button. Check which your car needs before ordering. A few buttons may do nothing if the unit has no matching function.
The unit has a fast reverse mode and works with 1080P AHD cameras (camera sold separately), so the picture appears quickly when you select reverse.
If your car already has a factory reversing camera, you'll need an adapter to keep it working after the upgrade; XTRONS ICE/ACS/FZMRM01 is compatible.
Connect a reversing camera and its picture appears on the screen when you select reverse. Automatic switching needs the reverse signal wired in. If your car already has a factory camera, check whether you need an adapter to keep it.
There's a region-free CD/DVD drive built into the unit, so your disc collection still has a place in the car alongside streaming apps.
The MediaTek MT6769V octa-core chipset has two Cortex A75 cores at 2.2GHz and six Cortex A55 cores, with a Mali-G52 GPU. It's paired with 4GB DDR4 RAM and 64GB UFS 2.2 storage, enough for navigation, music and 1080P video without long waits. A cast aluminium heat sink keeps it running steadily on long drives.

The IP76M164 is a plug-and-play fit for the W164 and X164, with an ISO wiring harness, a CANbus box and an installation holder in the box. If your car has the COMAND APS NTG 2.5 system, you'll also need an optical decoder box such as XTRONS FOBB02 to keep it. Check the year, dimensions and shape of your centre console before ordering, and a fitting by a qualified auto electrician is recommended.
