Android alongside your BMW system
The screen works with the BMW's original system, so the CD player, radio and iDrive all stay, with Android, CarPlay and Android Auto added on top.
Wireless Apple CarPlay
CarPlay connects your iPhone without a cable and shows maps, calls and music on the wide 12.3 inch screen.
Your iPhone connects on its own when you start the car, so there's no cable to plug in. It needs an iPhone with wireless CarPlay support; check yours in Settings > General > CarPlay. A cable still works when you'd rather charge on the way.
Wireless Android Auto
Android Auto connects wirelessly too, so Google Maps and your music apps appear without plugging in.
Maps, calls, messages and music from your Android phone appear on the car screen, with Google Assistant for voice control. It needs a phone with Google services, which most Android phones have. To connect without a cable, the phone must support wireless Android Auto too.
Snapdragon 680 and Android 13
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 with 4 x Kryo 265 Gold and 4 x Kryo 265 Silver cores, built on 6nm, runs at up to 2.4GHz. Dual channel 8GB DDR4 RAM and 128GB of solid state storage leave room for apps and offline maps.
It runs Android 13.
Integrated 4G LTE
Fit a Micro-SIM card (not included) and the screen has its own 4G data connection for music streaming and real-time navigation, and you can share it with passengers. It's data only, so calls go through apps.
In Europe it supports bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38 and 40. Check your carrier uses these bands before buying.
A SIM card in the head unit gives it its own internet connection for maps, traffic and streaming, so it doesn't need your phone's hotspot. You supply the SIM and the data plan; a data-only SIM is usually the cheapest way to do it.
Dual band Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz connects to a hotspot or your home network for browsing, streaming and online games.
Microphone for calls
The unit supports a microphone for clearer hands-free calls and voice commands.
External DAB+
Digital radio is supported with an external DAB tuner connected to the unit.
Digital radio gives clearer sound and more stations than FM where there's DAB coverage. It needs a DAB aerial: a stick-on windscreen aerial is the usual choice, or a splitter if your car already has a combined FM and DAB aerial.
